Singapore thrives on the strength of its workforce — and much of that strength comes from the hands and hearts of foreign workers. In industries like construction, thousands of individuals from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India contribute daily to building the very infrastructure we rely on.
The Language Barrier
For many of these workers, English is not their first language. In a city where communication is key, this barrier can make even the simplest tasks — asking for directions, buying groceries, understanding safety instructions — frustrating and disheartening. It can affect their work efficiency, limit their ability to connect with others, and chip away at their confidence.
Cultural Gaps and Public Perception
Beyond language, cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings in public spaces. Many workers come from rural backgrounds where public behaviour norms are very different. When they unknowingly act in ways that seem inappropriate to locals — on buses, trains, or in public areas — it can create discomfort or even tension.
At CoME, we believe integration begins with understanding. That’s why we conduct basic English and etiquette classes for foreign workers across Singapore. These sessions are more than just lessons — they are tools for empowerment.
We teach practical English that helps workers communicate clearly and confidently in daily life and on the job.
We share basic social etiquette to help them better understand local customs, public behaviour, and expectations.
